Edibles 101: Dosing, Timing & Desert-Day Tips
Guide · Good Weed Co Newsroom · 2026-10-27
Edibles are one of the most popular ways to enjoy cannabis in the Coachella Valley — no smoke, no smell, easy to tuck into a pool bag. They also work very differently from smoking, so a few basics go a long way.
Why edibles feel different
When you eat cannabis, it's processed by your digestive system and liver, where some THC is converted into a compound called 11-hydroxy-THC. Many people find edibles feel stronger and last longer than smoking or vaping the same amount.
How long do edibles take?
- Onset: often 30 minutes to 2 hours, and sometimes longer. It depends on your metabolism and whether you've eaten.
- Duration: effects commonly last several hours — much longer than smoking.
The number-one edible mistake is taking more because "it isn't working yet." Give it at least two hours before considering more.
California's dosing rules
Adult-use edibles in California are limited to 10 mg of THC per serving and 100 mg per package. That makes doses easy to track.
Finding your dose
- New or occasional users: many start with 2.5–5 mg.
- Experienced users often find a comfortable dose somewhere around 5–10 mg.
- Write down what you took and how it felt.
Desert-day tips
- Heat melts edibles. Chocolate and gummies don't survive a parked car in Palm Springs. Keep them cool.
- Hydrate. Desert sun plus edibles is a reason to drink extra water.
- Plan your day. Effects can last a while — don't drive, and save edibles for when you're settled in.
- Store them safely. Keep edibles in their child-resistant packaging, away from kids and pets.
