Few places feel as far away as the High Desert. Between the boulder fields of Joshua Tree, the old-west storefronts of Pioneertown and the star-filled skies over Twentynine Palms, it's one of Southern California's favorite getaways. If cannabis is part of your weekend, here's how to keep it relaxed and responsible.
The national park is federal land
This is the big one: Joshua Tree National Park is federal land, and cannabis is illegal there — even though it's legal in California. Leave it at your rental and enjoy the park sober. The same goes for other federal lands in the area.
Where to enjoy instead
Many visitors stay in vacation rentals in Joshua Tree, Yucca Valley and Twentynine Palms. Check your host's house rules first — some rentals allow cannabis outdoors on the property, others don't allow it at all. Your patio under the stars might be the best seat in the desert.
Stargazing, desert style
Joshua Tree National Park is recognized as an International Dark Sky Park, and the towns around it work to keep skies dark too. On a clear, moonless night you can see the Milky Way from many backyards. Bring layers — the High Desert sits at roughly 2,000–4,000 feet, and nights can turn chilly fast, even after a hot day.
Pioneertown
Built in the 1940s as a working set for western movies, Pioneertown still has its frontier-style main street and is a favorite for live music and sunsets. Plan your evening so nobody has to drive impaired — rideshares can be sparse out here, so sort out transport early.
Heat, altitude and hydration
- Drink more water than you think you need.
- Start with a lower dose than you would at home — sun, heat and long hike days add up.

Leave no trace
Pack out everything you bring, including roaches, cartridges and packaging. The desert is fragile.
